CINDY

Treasurer

(she, her)

Born and raised in Lafayette, LA Cindy’s family migrated to San Francisco in 1963. Cindy moved to Sacramento in 1987 and became involved with the LGBT community shortly thereafter. Cindy became aware of the efforts to collect and preserve our history through a friendship with Gayle Lange, one of the founding members of LLACE. Cindy joined the Board in February 2012 and was given the position of Treasurer. Cindy has 33 years in the Funeral Business as an Accountant and Licensed Funeral Director. Lavender Library is key to our community and our community is key to keeping the library open, we need each other to provide support. The library supports the community with a safe space, group support, and literature. The community supports the library with funds to keep us going. I have gained so much from my many years of being involved with the library, I have learned to enjoy reading, I have gained many friends and so much more. I am looking forward to the library continuing for many years.

Libraries have always been a place he has found sanctuary, intellectually and physically, and being a part of LLACE is a way to contribute to preserving the art and magic of reading. Without much in the way of blood family he’s dedicated his life to building chosen family, and dreaming up ways for QTPOC to strengthen and celebrate their kinship.

I'm a board member and general making-things-happen person at the Lavender Library, as well as some other queer organizations around Sacramento including Sac State's Queer & Trans Faculty and Staff association and Queersportz. I am passionate about the library for many reasons, chief among them: its place as a true queer & trans hub for the general Sacramento area, serving the community w/ our amazing collection, programming, and dedication to being rad AF. LLACE is all heart... and queer books, movies, archives, erotica too... but still, all heart.

MONICA

Head Archivist

(they, them)

I’m a femme genderqueer artist, activist, writer, survivor and librarian. I have always loved art, books, comics, and creating meaningful experiences for myself and the people around me. I was born in California and moved all over Texas growing up, but I find a deep cultural connection to my ancestral lands of El Paso, Texas. I have always been a passionate advocate for social justice and radical change in our systems that fail communities seen as Other. As an artist, I believe representation through visual art and literature has the ability to empower, educate, and inspire those who experience it. My art practice of painting, collage, and photography captures the experiences of QTBIPOC lives and has been featured in LLACE Creates, my first LLACE experience. As a librarian, my belief of access, belonging, and literacy continues to help LLACE be the one of the most intersectional queer spaces in Sacramento. As an archivist, I work to preserve the history that is often overlooked & whitewashed while learning my own history. I am a multi-faceted Xicana who has various interests, I love reading comics, exploring record stores, and finding quality coffee. I enjoy hiking, art galleries, and attending punk shows.

Lenix is a unicorn in training. By day, they’re a digital strategist for progressive candidates and causes, but they’d much prefer to spend all their time outdoors. They are a lover of furry beasts, a book nerd, a happy house-husband, women’s basketball enthusiast, aspiring plant whisperer who will point out interesting nature things while out on the trails. They recently moved to Sacramento from Los Angeles and are excited to help grow the Lavender Library. Queer Literature has been a constant for them since coming out 15 years ago. LLACE is a way for them to develop friendships in Sacramento with like minded folks and talk about their favorite trans authors.

I started my career in Fresno and soon after transferred to San Jose before settling in Sacramento in 1988. My interests are gardening, hiking, boating, water skiing, biking and woodworking. I like to do arts and crafts, read books on queer history, watch documentaries and enjoy the company of my wife and friends. I was introduced to the Lavender Library in 2000 by a friend and attended many of the Author’s reading and book signing events. I have made many lasting friends over the years at the library and in 2012 became a volunteer. I serve on the board and co-chair the operations. committee.

A giant queer dweeb of color (Latinx) whose mission in life is to do their part towards building a safer and more equitable world for us all. The Lavender Library, as one of the few queer libraries in the world, does just that. It was the first place I turned to when moving to Sacramento and it provides the kinds of resources I wish I had growing up. I want to do everything I can to ensure it continues running.

(he, him)

I’m a sorta chaotic Virgo who loves all kinds of music and people, and is committed to helping marginalized communities--whether it’s during my day job helping undocumented folks or volunteering for organizations like the Lavender Library that are committed to equity, justice, and inclusion. I enjoy immersing myself in realismo magico, deeping my connection to nature, and cuddling my cat (ask me for a pic). I love the Lavender Library because it has proven itself to be a dynamic, queer-centered space that feels like home to so many. I am excited to see it flourish and expand its oh-so-needed impact on our communities.

I love that LLACE works hard for queer community beyond the library space and archives—LLACE works to actively create better futures for all queer folks in and around Sacramento. I’m also a co-organizer of the San Francisco Zine Fest, starting a zine distro, am trained as a journalist, and I do writing, editing and small business development for anyone with a vision. Futuristic thinking is my favorite activity.
