Happy Birthday to Audre Lorde, Barbara Jordan, Judith Butler, Janet Mock, and Bayard Rustin!

We honor these leaders and the strength they instill in us to resist oppression in all its forms. To remember their work and help us to engage in reflection, here are just a few quotes:

"When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." ~Audre Lorde

"Just remember the world is not a playground but a schoolroom. Life is not a holiday but an education. One eternal lesson for us all: to teach us how better we should love." ~Barbara Jordan

"I was born a Zionist, because I didn't have a choice about that. It was the ether of my family life, but I certainly broke with it as I asked more questions about it. And that doesn't mean I want to see the destruction of a people, it means I want to see a state structure that might embody more substantially the basic principles of democracy." ~Judith Butler

"Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they recognize your power - not because they don't see it, but because they do see it and they don't want it to exist." ~Janet Mock

"I believe that telling our stories, first to ourselves and then to one another and the world, is a revolutionary act. It is an act that can be met with hostility, exclusion, and violence. It can also lead to love, understanding, transcendence, and community. I hope that my being real with you will help empower you to step into who you are and encourage you to share yourself with those around you." ~Janet Mock

"Let us be enraged about injustice, but let us not be destroyed by it." ~Bayard Rustin
